There’s no denying it—our world feels heavy right now. Soaring grocery prices, rising medical bills, and the pressure to keep up with the latest technology leave many people feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, and afraid.
But what if I told you that you have the power to shift your thoughts and change your outcome?
When I was recently diagnosed with cancer, my world became a whirlwind of medical appointments, bloodwork, chemotherapy, and CAT scans. My days no longer held a sense of normalcy, and at times, the weight of it all felt unbearable.
Then, a memory visited me like a gentle hug from the past—me, a little girl sitting cross-legged in my Grandpa Smith’s vegetable garden. We’d pick fresh peas together, and honestly, I probably ate more than I saved for dinner. Those peas were like candy—sweet, crisp, and bursting with life. That garden was filled with peace, love, and simplicity. There were no ringing cell phones or social media notifications—just meaningful moments and stories. I remember listening in awe as Grandpa shared his experience of landing on the shores of Dieppe in World War II. His courage and his strength all made sense to me. That’s where my own courage must come from. He was my teacher in more ways than one.
As I grew older, I tried to grow my own vegetables, but overwatering got the best of me, and I gave up for a while. Then I met Ross, my husband, aka the Green Thumb King, who grew up on a vegetable farm. He showed me how to care for my plants without drowning them, and year by year, our garden grew more creative and abundant.
But with cancer came a shift—I craved even more control over my health and what I was putting into my body. Enter my dear friend and fellow cancer survivor, Ellen. She began sending me photos of her indoor hydroponic garden bursting with fresh salad greens all year long. The more I saw, the more I knew this was my answer.
Ross and I dove into the world of hydroponics with the help of Happy Hydroponics (https://happyhydroponics.ca/), a warm, family-run Canadian business with over 30 years of experience. They guided us with lighting recommendations, watering tips, and a variety of crop suggestions. With their support, we began growing a vibrant indoor garden that now fills our home and our plates with nutrient-rich food grown with love.
Suddenly, something beautiful happened: I felt a positive shift within me. The chaos of living with cancer faded as my attention turned to eagerly watching tiny lettuce leaves sprout and grow. The first time I picked and tasted my homegrown microgreens was a moment of pure joy.
Our hydroponic crops now include red peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, arugula, and of course, my microgreens. We still maintain a seasonal outdoor garden, growing cucumbers that become winter pickles and relish, and tomatoes that we turn into fresh salsa and spaghetti sauce. There’s power in knowing and pronouncing every ingredient you consume. That alone relieves stress on many levels.
Why Hydroponics?
Hydroponics allows for year-round growth regardless of outdoor conditions. With the right system, you can grow 25+ lbs of fresh food every 28 days. Indoor growing isn’t affected by unpredictable weather, pests, or soil quality. And it’s surprisingly sustainable, using less water and producing less waste than traditional gardening.
Even more important for me, hydroponics ensures I’m eating pesticide-free, toxin-free produce. I know exactly where my food comes from—and it comes with love.
Gardening That Heals
For many, gardening can feel overwhelming. But hydroponic gardening simplifies the process. No soil. Minimal mess. Smart systems make it easy to nurture your plants, even if you’re a beginner. It’s the perfect entry point into a new hobby that nurtures both your body and your spirit.
If you don’t have outdoor space, don’t worry. Hydroponics fits beautifully into apartments, condos, or any indoor area. If you prefer traditional gardening but lack land, check your area for community garden plots. There’s always a way to connect with the earth—even indoors.
And the best part? My health is improving. Since fueling my body with homegrown, organic food and focusing on healing through nature, I feel stronger—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
So, what if today, you paused and asked yourself:
“What if I could shift my focus… and completely transform my outcome?”
For me, it began with something as simple as a handful of peas and the cherished memory of a brave man who taught me what true courage looked like. From that spark, a miracle took root—a hydroponic garden that now overflows with life, healing, and love.
Each leaf I grow is more than food—it’s a symbol of resilience, a quiet rebellion against fear, and a daily reminder that even in the midst of adversity, we can choose to nourish our bodies, uplift our minds, and grow something beautiful.
Maybe your miracle is waiting, too—just beneath the surface. All it needs… is for you to plant the seed.
Wishing you much love & many blessings,
