Cute Little Girl Smelling Red RosesMany years ago, my 3-year-old daughter taught me a valuable lesson I will never forget. In my constant rush to accomplish as much as possible each day, along with worrying a lot, I found myself rarely living in the present moment, often failing to listen to those around me. This all changed one beautiful, sunny summer day during a walk with my wise old soul of a daughter.

As we strolled along, with me stressed and preoccupied, she stopped walking, turned to me, and said, “Mommy, you’ve gotta take some time to stop and smell the roses.” Her simple, profound advice struck a chord within me. She was absolutely right. I was spending so much time stressed, in fear of the unknown, and preoccupied with the ‘what ifs’ of the future. We approached a gorgeous red rose bush, its vibrant blooms exuding a delightful fragrance. Together, we enjoyed that special moment. In that time, I was completely present. It was such an amazing gift not to feel stress and anxiety.

Sometimes life gets challenging. Things happen. Many people spend so much time worrying and for no reason. Mark Twain said it best: “I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened. Worrying is like paying a debt you don’t owe. I have spent most of my life worrying about things that have never happened.”

I have graduated from fear of the unknown and am no longer preoccupied with what the future holds. When we are present, we are guided to the answers, to the signs that confirm our decisions, and to the right people and pets that will support us. Instead of carrying that fear and anxiety around, shift your thoughts away from the potential situations and focus more on the solutions. I know you will enjoy a much better quality of life, and once you are present, you will experience the love, joy, and magic that surround each one of us.
