There was a moment in my cancer journey that felt surprisingly simple...and yet, it became one of the most powerful parts of my healing. It wasn’t a treatment. It wasn’t something complicated or overwhelming.

It was this:

My doctors told me to go outside… and sit in the sun. At the time, it almost felt too easy to matter. But I listened. And what I discovered in those quiet moments changed everything. I would step outside and let the sunlight touch my skin. At first, I was just following instructions. But very quickly, something began to shift. As the warmth settled over me, I could feel my body soften. The tension I had been carrying physically, emotionally, energetically started to melt away without effort. A calm would come in… not something I created…but something I allowed. And then I began to notice everything else. The birds. They weren’t just background noise anymore. They felt like a gentle lullaby, as if nature itself was holding me in that moment. The air felt lighter. The space felt peaceful. And beside me, my dogs, Buddy and Marley, would settle in. We would sit there together… in the sunlight… in the quiet. No doing. No fixing. No trying to be strong. Just being.

And in those moments, something profound would happen. I could feel the stress leaving my body. My breathing would slow naturally. My nervous system, so activated from everything I was going through, would begin to reset. And I could feel it in them too. Our pets feel everything we feel. They carry what we carry. But in those moments, we were all letting go…together. There was a shared sense of peace. A connection that didn’t need words. Just presence. The more I did this, the more I realized this wasn’t just a suggestion for healing… It was healing. The sunlight wasn’t only warming my body, it was supporting it. Gently lifting my mood. Helping my body restore and rebalance.

Being outside brought me back into the present moment. Into nature. Into a space where my body could remember what calm actually feels like. Emotionally, it gave me relief. Spiritually, it felt like being held. Like I didn’t have to do this alone.

Now, this is something I recommend to everyone. Not as something complicated. Not as something you have to get perfect. But as a simple, gentle practice. Step outside. Sit in the sunlight. Let it touch your skin. If your pet is with you, let them join you. Let them lie beside you. And allow both of you to simply receive. You don’t need to force calm. You don’t need to try to heal. Just allow the moment. Because something powerful happens when you do. Your body softens. Your mind quiets. Your energy shifts. And sometimes… that is exactly where healing begins.

So if you take anything from my experience, let it be this:

Go sit in the sun. Let nature hold you. Let your pet be with you. And give yourself permission… to simply be in the light.
